Pool Water Too Hot in July: Your Options
Warm pool water isn't just less fun. It also uses up chlorine faster and gives algae an easier start. Here are your options, roughly from cheapest to most involved.
1. Free or nearly free
- Take the solar cover off during summer days.
- Confirm the heater or heat pump isn't set to heat. It happens more often than you'd think, especially with app schedules.
- Run waterfalls, deck jets or fountains overnight to cool the water by evaporation (it uses water).
2. Shade
Shade sails, umbrellas or trees on the west side cut the afternoon sun. Check HOA rules and wind ratings, since Vegas gets strong gusts.
3. Equipment
A chiller or heat/cool heat pump actively cools the water. It costs money to buy and run, and needs airflow and adequate electrical service.
4. Chemistry while it's hot
- Test more often. Warm water and strong sun use up chlorine quickly.
- Keep stabilizer (CYA) in the range your test kit or pool professional recommends.
- Brush walls and run the pump enough to keep the water circulating.
- Clean the filter. Good flow matters more in heat.
What not to do
- Don't dump ice. It's expensive and barely changes the temperature.
- Don't drain and refill to cool the pool without checking local water rules. Fresh tap water also warms up quickly.
